WRO & First LEGO League: A Chennai Parent's Guide to Robotics Competitions
What are WRO (World Robot Olympiad) and First LEGO League, why do they matter, and how does an Indian child get started? A field-tested guide.
Two names come up whenever robotics gets serious: WRO (World Robot Olympiad) and First LEGO League (FLL). If you're a Chennai parent wondering whether these are worth chasing, this is the honest answer.
What is WRO?
WRO is a global robotics competition running since 2004, with an annual international final and national qualifiers in 90+ countries. Kids compete in categories from ages 8 to 19 using LEGO® Education kits to solve themed missions on a mat. India runs a national qualifier every year, feeding into the international final. In 2025, Cubotics' founding team coached students to the WRO international final in Singapore.
What is First LEGO League?
FLL runs in three age tiers:
- FLL Discover (4–6 years) — story-based, no competition pressure.
- FLL Explore (6–10 years) — team project + a simple robot showcase.
- FLL Challenge (9–16 years) — full competition with a robot game, research project, and core values judging.
Why these matter beyond trophies
- Deadline pressure. A season has a real date. Kids learn to ship.
- Team dynamics. Robotics teams argue about design, split roles, resolve conflict — soft skills school rarely teaches.
- Portfolio. Selective schools and future universities recognise both competitions.
- Perspective. A child from Anna Nagar meeting a child from Tokyo at an international final expands what feels possible.
Getting started in Chennai
- Enroll in a certified LEGO® Education program — you need Spike Prime or equivalent kit access.
- Start with FLL Explore (ages 6–10) — lower stakes, teaches the format.
- Aim for WRO India qualifiers the following year.
- Look for a coach with actual competition experience, not just a robotics degree.
Common myths
- "My child needs to be a coding prodigy." — No. Team success is 40% design, 40% strategy, 20% coding.
- "You need to spend lakhs." — Kits, coaching, and travel add up; the family should budget for them, though clubs often help with kit access and coaching.
- "It's only for older kids." — Discover and Explore start at age 4.
