How to Choose an After-School Class in Chennai: A Mother's Checklist
Overwhelmed by after-school options in Chennai? A 10-point checklist mothers can use to pick a class that actually builds skill — not just a certificate.
Every Chennai neighbourhood has thirty after-school options and a WhatsApp group where mothers debate all of them. This is the checklist we hand parents before they walk into any center — Cubotics included.
The 10-point checklist
- Curriculum document. Ask for it. If they can't share one, it doesn't exist.
- Batch size. 8 or fewer for hands-on subjects. 12 max for anything else.
- Instructor experience. Not "graduate of X" — ask what they've actually taught, for how many years.
- Progression across a year. Show me month 3 vs month 9. Should look different.
- Kit / equipment quality. Real gear, not toys. For robotics: LEGO® Education, not hobby sets.
- A tangible take-home. Not a certificate — a portfolio, a working project, a demonstrable skill.
- Competition or showcase pathway. Kids work harder with a stage at the end.
- Distance from home. 15 minutes' drive max. Two hours in Chennai traffic ruins any class.
- Trial class option. If they won't do one, they don't trust their product.
- Retention rate. Ask what percentage of kids re-enroll. Good centers know this number.
The "why us" test
Ask the center: "In one sentence, what will my child be able to do after a year that they can't do today?" A good answer is specific: "Build a robot that follows a line using two sensors and a Python-like block program." A bad answer sounds like a brochure.
Red flags Chennai mothers should walk out on
- 25 kids in a batch with one instructor.
- Same lesson repeated week after week.
- Certificates handed out at month 1 to hook parents.
- Marketing that emphasises awards over skill outcomes.
- No visible senior educator on the team — just business staff.
Neighbourhood note
Anna Nagar East and Adyar have some of the highest concentrations of academic-focused families in Chennai. That's a double-edged sword — the market gets flooded with lookalike programs. Use the checklist. It cuts through fast.
